Teachers Attrition Strike Yakaw JHS; Only Two (2) Teachers in the School.

Reports reaching Chrisdaily indicate that many schools in the Ahanta West Municipal Assembly are struck by increasing teachers attrition of which Yakaw M/A JHS is no exception.

Currently, only two teachers – the headmistress and one other male teacher – are handling all the three JHS classes, a development which is hugely affecting teaching and learning in the school, at least since last term of the academic year.

On Wednesday, January 22, 2020, Radio Ahanta reporters, Sammy Junior and Christian Yalley paid a visit to the School to get the reality on the grounds. On their arrival, they were greeted with the question, “Are you coming to teach us?,” a question that came from some of the JHS students who have been highly anticipating to see new teachers in their school.

From some underground investigations, most teachers have been transferred to other schools due to various unfavourable conditions which include but not limited to accommodation challenges and poor treatment from some residents.

The situation is same at the Kindergarten. There are only three (3) teachers currently working there, one is already leaving. The ratio of teachers to pupils is 1:64 approximately. These children, we are told, walk from communities such as Kwesikrom and Bofin to the school which is located at Sankor.

The children used to get water from this mechanised borehole but they no longer get access to it. Sometimes, teachers leave their duties to fetch water from some dug boreholes for the children.

Due to lack of a toilet facility for the children to use, they defecate in the bush, thereby leading to a strong, offensive smell which welcomes the teachers and pupils on daily basis especially when it rains.

An old toilet building which has been abandoned.

It must be added that the state of the canteen or the kitchen is nothing to write home about as several reports indicate that even the meals served the children are not proper.

This is where meals are cooked and served to the KG and Primary pupils
