Ahanta West: NCCE holds social auditing engagement at Elobankata

The 1992 constitution mandates the NCCE to engage, educate and empower Ghanaians to know their civil Rights and Responsibilities, so they can play their role as active citizens.

The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has held a community engagement, on 23rd August 2020, at Elobankta in the Ahanta West, on Social Auditing, a planned activity under the Anti- Corruption, Rule of law And Accountability program (ARAP).

The Municipal Director Of NCCE, Madam Faustina Koranteng said, this year’s program is carried out in all 254 Districts across the country, with a theme “Citizens for Transparency and Accountability”.

On the other hand, Madam Faustina Koranteng said, “the aim of social auditing is to promote community ownership of developmental projects and policies, increase awareness of the operations of the local government and empower the citizenry to demand accountability from duty bearers”.

“Social auditing program will afford community members to know the plans, policies and programs of the Municipal Assembly in order to closely monitor their activities”.

She also sighted that persons outside government operations (such as NGOs) will also be given the opportunity to influence policies made.

Mr. Ben Amenfi Jnr. The Municipal Director for CHRAJ also stated that; Social Auditing started in early 1960’s and 1970’s .

He further said, it’s a must for companies to account for their social effects on the society and it is a purely internal corporate phenomenon.

Mr. Ben Amenfi Jnr speaking said, “the relevance of Social Auditing is to Reduce Apathy, Ensure Sustainability, Reduce opportunities for corruption, Deepening and expanding the frontiers of transparency and accountability.

He therefore concluded that, “transparency is the lack of hidden agenda or conditions accompanied by the availability of full information required of collaboration, cooperation and collection of decision making”.

Some community members also spoke about the challenges they are facing.

A program which attracted a lot of dignitaries including chiefs, opinion leaders and also the Western Regional NCCE director, was very much successful and was sponsored by European Union.
