W/R: UMaT Basic School Maintains Regional Quiz Competition Championship

The UMat basic school in Tarkwa has maintained their championship in the 5th edition of the Annual Western Region Inter-district JHS Independence Day Quiz Competition held on Wednesday March 4, 2020 at the Roman Catholic Church in Tarkwa.

The preliminary round saw ten schools competing to justify their inclusion among the five schools to join UMat basic school, the defending champions for the main Competition.

The main competition saw six schools competing for the championship on behalf of their respective MMDAs.

The schools included; ST. Augustinus School representing Nzema East District, Peace International school – Jomoro Municipality, Christ Leading International – Ellembelle District, UMat Basic school – Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipality, ST. Anthony And Padua Catholic JHS – Effia Kwesimintsim Municipality and Subri International Plantation Limited D/A school complex – Wassa East District.

At the end of the final round, UMat Basic scored 82 points to emerge as the champions, Christ leading International placed second with 77 points while Peace International school scored 76 points to place third.

The winning school was awarded laptops, printer, trophy, books, plaques, medals, and certificate. The second and third position schools garnered laptops, books, plaques, medals and certificate.

Certificate of participation was given to all the schools that participated. The program was chaired by the Paramount Chief of Wassa Amenfi Traditional Area, Tetrete Okuamoah Sekyim II.

He expressed his happiness towards the program and admonished the students to remain focused with their studies and take advantage of the Free SHS policy in order to achieve their goals of life.

He also advised parents to endeavor to provide the necessary support for their wards in order to make education lovely for them. He thanked and encouraged the organizers and sponsors, especially Gold Fields, the headline sponsor to continue with the gesture to help build these pupils who are the future leaders o the nation.

He also entreated the directors and coordinators of education to cooperate with the organizers and continue with the exposure being given to the children.

The Western Regional Director of education, Mr Addo Danquah Akufo expressed his joy for the move by the organizers and also commended the children for their composure kept in answering the questions.

However, he advised the teachers to add questions that will enable the children think critically before answering, this will help develop their critical thinking abilities.

His royal Highness Obrempon Hima Dekyi XIV, Paramount Chief of Lower Dixcove and the Executive Chairman for the Annual Western Region Inter-district JHS Independence Day Quiz Competition, in an interview with the media said that they will do everything possible to continue with the competition annually and rectify any shortfalls to build upon.

He said that other subjects areas will be added in subsequent competitions to heighten the competitiveness of the program. He also called on other cooperate bodies to support the quiz competition.

Hon Gilbert Asmah, the Municipal Chief Executive for the Tarkwa- Nsuaem Municipal Assembly, who represented the Western regional Minister, expressed his happiness at UMat Basic School’s back-to-back win of the championship.

He touted the President’s commitment to the development of Ghanaian children through the Free SHS policy which seeks to provide equal education opportunity for all Ghanaian children.

He called on parents to support the government in order to achieve his goal for the policy.
