CONSOLIDATING OUR GAINS, HOLDING UP THE DREAM OF THE TORCHBEARERS.

Ever since the brave declaration of freedom by Dr Kwame Nkrumah, the political history of Ghana steadily evolves around one day, a day that gloriously truncated the domination of foreign influence in Ghanaian affairs and lit the flame of self-government.

6th March 1957 ushered in a new era, one in which we were to challenge the cunningly devised fable that the Black Man could not manage his own affairs and one in which we were to collectively build and move our nation forward for ourselves and the unborn multitudes.

The journey to this serene democracy we enjoy has not been a smooth one; starring a long period of different episodes of military insurrections by top military figures and their minions and underlings.
Verily, we cannot outrightly condemn those dark ages, given the weightier disadvantages.

These occurrences succeeded in accentuating the place of democracy in the developmental puzzle and for a foolproof system in toto.

Also, it sharpened our moral and patriotic fibre as a people to stand up for the right and speak truth to power.

The series of protests and picketing cannot be condemned, however baseless and jejune the underlying claims may have been.

Today, we together wind up at 63, a very applaudable feat. We cannot celebrate Independence without deeply etching and emboldening the contributions of Dr Kwame Nkrumah, J B Danquah, Ako Adjei and many others that cannot be mentioned but are remembered.

We also cannot relegate the contributions of every single head of state at each point in time for their contributions to the development of this country and gradually stilling the excesses of foreign influence.

We commend President J J Rawlings and the NDC for midwiving the 4th Republic trajectory, the longest so far.

We commend President J A Kufuor for practising an all inclusive government with representatives from every corner of the political divide.

We commend President Prof Mills for continuously hammering on the essence of peace and brotherly love in the development of this country.

We commend President Mahama for maintaining the peace we were enjoying and for bravely holding the fort after the demise of President Mills.

We commend President Akufo-Addo for implementing the Right to Information Bill and rotating the venue for the National Annual Independence Celebration, all to deeply entrench and embed democracy and general inclusiveness.

As a people, Independence Day affords us the golden opportunity to go back to our roots; the music, the food, the clothing and many others to revive the true Ghanaian spirit.

It furthermore supports us to reminisce and meditate upon the words of the National Pledge and National Anthem and influence our contributions to democracy, unity and nation building.

May God continue to bless Ghana and plug us off the wiles and bushtraps of oppression and apprehension.

God bless our Homeland and make her great and strong!
