The office of the Dean of Student Affairs of the University of Ghana (UG) has demanded to be furnished with all the documents pertaining to the alleged withdrawal of unapproved monies.
This follows allegations against the executives of the UG Students Representative Council (SRC) for expending monies to a tune of about GH¢ 66,000 without the approval of its legislative body, General Assembly.
Constitutionally, without the approval of the General Assembly, SRC monies may not be expended on items not budgeted for.
Meanwhile, the President and Treasurer of the SRC, Isaac Agyemang and Philomena Sarbah Andam respectively, have denied the allegations leveled at them.
They argue that the decision to go ahead with the withdrawal without proper consent was due to the ‘emergency nature of the activities’.
Also, they cited that the shortfalls in the revenues led to the rushed decision to effect the withdrawals.
Wading into the conversation, Prof. Godfred Alufar Bokpin says his office has made requests to get to the SRC to get the full details of the allegations. He was speaking on our morning show, Campus Exclusive.
“I haven’t been furnished with all these things. These are things that happened last Friday. So, I think my strategy will be that; I will want to get all the documents and look at the argument. I will also check with our office” – Prof. Bokpin said.
Adding to that, Prof. Bokpin says the monies withdrawn was as a result of ‘certain tradeoffs’ among the various campuses and that may account for the variances.
In the meantime, the Dean has excused himself from making any preemptive statements until he has a full understanding of the issue at hand. He further promised to bring clarity to the allegations.
“I think that there were certain processes and tradeoffs that had to be made between the main campus, satellite campuses and Korle Bu. Because there were different figures that are being circulated and I don’t want to add to that speculation. I’m going to ask for all the documentation and then we should be able to bring some clarity to bear.” – he added
Meanwhile, the General Assembly of the SRC has referred the ‘audited’ accounts of the SRC to the Audit Committee.
The Committee is also expected to complete its investigations within seven days and furnish the House with its findings.
