Ahanta West Teacher Deficit Hits 208 – Education PRO Reveals

– The Ahanta West GES PRO disclosed that there are about 208 vacancies across the Municipality.

He said that only 28 teachers have been posted to Ahanta West since December 2019.

The Ahanta West Municipal Assembly of the Western Region has been hit with high rate of teacher attrition recently.

It is said on record that there is about 208 vacancies in the various basic schools, a development which started some few years ago, with about 25 teachers retiring in the year 2018 alone.

Speaking to Radio Ahanta’s Morning Show Host, Sammy Junior, the Ghana Education Service’s (GES) Public Relations Officer in the Municipality, Mr. Daniel Payne admitted that the situation “is a problem,” adding that no teacher was recruited in 2018.

He further stated that a number of teachers took their study leaves in 2019, others were transferred, and some requested for release.

In his concluding remarks, the PRO maintained that there are instances where teachers would be appointed to teach in Ahanta West but they end up in other districts.

“This is one of the anomalies in the system, teachers would be posted to teach in Ahanta West but they end up somewhere. Meanwhile, everything on their forms show that they should be here,” Mr Payne lamented.

Background

In the last few academic years, many schools in the Ahanta West Municipality have suffered drastic reduction in the numbers of teachers.

Some of the causative factors include accommodation challenges, gross disrespect from some parents and guardians, and generally unfavourable working conditions.

For instance, Yakaw M/A Junior High School can boast of only two (2) teachers, the headmistress and one other teacher. The Primary school virtually has three (3) empty classes.

Chrisdaily can report that there are schools in Agona Nkwanta which have all the teachers, yet, NABCO and National Service Personnel have been posted to such schools, so these personnel are there as teaching assistants.

All in all, the Education Directorate, according to Mr Payne, is working around the clock to resolve these “anomalies.”
